Onglyza Suite Over Heart Complications?

The FDA's Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee voted to require the drug's manufacturer to update the warning label for two populardipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors: Onglyza (saxagliptin, Bristol-Myers Squibb/AstraZeneca) and Nesina (algoliptin, Takeda Pharmaceuticals) due to safety concerns recently raised linking the medications cardiovascular complications. Patients prescribed the medications may not have been adequately warned of the very serious risks to their health.

When the drug was approved in 2008, FDA warning guidance only required drugs to warn of heart risks or other cardiovascular conditions were increased above 30%. A safety study was conducted revealing a potential condition increase risk of 27% for patients, under the 30% threshold. At that rate, even for very serious heart problems and potential for death, the manufacturer was not required, and did not choose to warn patients of the potential hazard.
