The manufacturers of testosterone treatments aggressively marketed AndroGel, Androderm, Axiron, Delatestryl, Depo-Testosterone, Fortesta, Striant, Testim, and Testopel to treat a variety of symptoms ranging from low energy, reduced libido, poor mood and other problems associated with the natural aging process. A number of testosterone lawsuits have been filed alleging very serious health risks which may not have been warned to patients receiving treatment. The only FDA-approved use for these drugs is to treat decreased testosterone levels caused by hypogonadism.
A natural decline in hormone levels in men is to be expected as a result of the aging process, and doctors, unaware of the risks, were prescribing these treatments in an effort to improve sex drive, increase lean muscle mass and bone density, increase energy levels and improve hormonal mood imbalances.
Recent studies, however, suggest that risks associated with the use of the treatments can be very dangerous indeed. A recent JAMA study reported men who used the testosterone supplements as 30% more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, or death. According to the Wall Street Journal (Nov 5, 2013, an additional study has begun exploring possible links to problems with walking, sexual function, and fatigue, though the results have yet to be reported.
